The Office of Safety, Health and the Environment (OSSMA) was created in 1998 by agreement of the Board of Governors, with the aim of providing the University of Barcelona with a technical organizational structure to manage and promote the integration of occupational risk prevention and the environment at the UB, in accordance with regulations.
Initially, the Office was formed by the Occupational Safety and Health Area and the Environmental Area. Subsequently, in 2009, the Social Services Area was created to offer University staff a personalized and confidential service of counseling and professional assistance in the face of possible personal, work and social and family problems.
The OSSMA, therefore, is a multidisciplinary office formed by a heterogeneous group of professionals.
Its mission is to ensure the adequate promotion, prevention and protection of the health and safety of UB employees, as well as environmentally friendly practices throughout the University.
Its functions are to provide advice and assistance to all members of the university community: the rector’s team, UB staff and their representatives, specialized representative bodies and students.
Who we are and what we do
Safety and Health
In accordance with the UB Statute and the UB Prevention Plan, the Health and Safety Area carries out preventive activities. It is constituted as the University’s own prevention service, with the four specialties established by law:
- occupational safety
- ergonomics and applied psychosociology
- industrial hygiene
- occupational medicine
Its functions are those established in the regulations and consist of providing the University with the necessary advice and assistance to manage and integrate occupational risk prevention throughout the university community, in compliance with the UB’s Prevention Plan.
Environment
The Environmental Area of the OSSMA carries out actions to support the deployment of selective collection, the proper management of waste generated at the UB and the implementation of environmental plans in faculties and administrative units. In addition, it proposes environmental sustainability criteria for subcontracted companies, teaches courses on the environment, undertakes projects to promote sustainable mobility and promotes environmental awareness campaigns among the university community.
Social assistance
The University of Barcelona, with the aim of improving the integral wellbeing of the people who work there, has set up the Social Welfare Area within the OSSMA. This area offers a service of attention, support and follow-up of the personal, labor and socio-family problems of the University’s employees. Promotes and applies the personal and social resources available within and outside the scope of the University, with the aim of contributing to improve the working conditions and quality of life of employees and their families.
