Rule 1/98
Use of personal protective equipment in laboratory practices
Approved by the Committee: 16/01/1998
Approved by the Governing Board: 19/02/1998
In the practices corresponding to any teaching at the University of Barcelona, and in which any product or material is handled that, due to its hazardous characteristics, may represent a risk to the safety and health of people, it will be a compulsory rule, for all University staff and students, the use, as a minimum, of laboratory coats and safety goggles (goggles that provide protection against impact or splashes from the front and periphery), approved in accordance with EEC regulations on personal protective equipment. For this purpose, the University of Barcelona will provide its staff with the necessary equipment.
Rule 2/98
Preventive measures to be adopted in field work carried out by students of the University of Barcelona
Approved by the Committee: 16/01/1998
Approved by the Junta de Govern: 16/04/1998
- The University of Barcelona covers the risk derived from the field placements provided for in the teaching plan for its subjects. In the case of immersion practices, the student must be up to date with licensing and insurance.
- At the beginning of each semester, the planning of field trips for each subject will be submitted to the secretary’s office of each faculty or school, with the approval of the Head of Studies. In this plan, each trip will be detailed with its itinerary and the activities involved. Before each field trip, the teacher will hand out a form indicating the teacher and the students taking part in each field trip. A copy of this full list will be sent to the Department responsible for the activity and to the secretary’s office of the Faculty. If there are changes in the initial planning, it is necessary to notify the secretary’s office with the approval of the Head of Studies.
- Activities with more than twenty students will have to go on field trips by coach. Exceptions must be duly justified. For those subjects with fewer than twenty students, students may be authorised to use their own vehicles, provided that they comply with the regulations required by law (compulsory insurance, valid MOT and vehicle documentation). The use of private vehicles will not be authorised for journeys involving more than eight hours of driving per day.
- If the group of students is large and the activity lasts more than one day, the relevant authorities must be notified so that they are aware of the activities being carried out and can intervene if necessary in the event of an accident.
- In no case will it be allowed to carry out field work that requires the student to be alone. This means that the groups must have a minimum of two students. Students and teachers will agree on the time and place to meet when the day’s work is finished. If any group of students is missing, the relevant authorities and the Dean of the Faculty will be notified and the search for them will begin.
- In those practices where there is a risk of falling from blocks or boulders (edges of cliffs, rocks, mines, etc.), the student must wear a helmet and other safety measures that the teacher deems appropriate. The teacher in charge will ensure that this rule is complied with.
- In the case of activities that require the use of University of Barcelona boats, the teacher will ensure that the maximum capacity is not exceeded and that all applicable safety measures are followed (armour, lifeguards, warning signs, etc.).
RULE 3/98
Preventive measures to be adopted during visits to industries or other teaching institutions by students of the University of Barcelona
Approved by the Committee: 16/01/1998
Approved by the Junta de Govern: 16/04/1998
- The University of Barcelona covers the risk derived from the visits to industries or teaching centres foreseen in the teaching plan of the subjects.
- At the beginning of each semester, the planning of the visits for each subject will be submitted to the secretary’s office of each Faculty or School, with the approval of the Head of Studies. In this plan, each visit will be detailed with its itinerary and the activities involved. Before each trip, the teacher will hand out a form indicating the teacher and the students taking part in each visit. A copy of this full list will be sent to the Department responsible for the activity and to the secretary’s office of the Faculty. If there are changes in the initial planning, it is necessary to notify the secretary’s office with the approval of the Head of Studies.
- Visits to industries or other non-public centres will require the written authorisation of the centre being visited.
- Teachers and students will be subject to the prevention rules for visitors, if the industry or work centre has adopted them.
Rule 4/98

Approved by the Committee: 16/01/1998
Approved by the Junta de Govern: 16/04/1998
