Josep Cerdà is Doctor in Fine Arts, professor of sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, and is currently director of the Master in Sound Art at the UB and coordinator of the Doctorate of the Faculty of Fine Arts UB. He has been Dean of the UB Faculty of Fine Arts, Director of the Department of Sculpture and Director of the Department of Visual Arts and Design at the University of Barcelona. He has taught at different international universities, at the UNESP of Sao Paulo in Brazil, the UNAM of Mexico, the University of Lisbon, the Catholic University of Chile, the UAN of Colombia, the University of La Paz, Bolivia, La Universidade das Açores . He is a member of the Recognized Research Group of Art Science: Barcelona Art and Creation of the University of Barcelona. He is a member of the GIIP Research Group of Art, Science and Technology Convergence of the Universidade Estadual Paulista de Sao Paulo, Brazil, member of the Interdisciplinary Research Group of Experimentation and Research of Sound Sculpture (GIEIES) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico UNAM. Member of the Palas y Musas Research Group, Aesthetic Research Institute and the Research Institute in Applied Mathematics in Systems, UNAM, Mexico. He has given courses and conferences at prestigious universities around the world, UNAM de México; University of Sao Paulo and University of Brasilia (Brazil), University of the Azores Islands, UAN of Bogotá (Colombia) and in Contemporary Art centers such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
As an artist he has been afiliated to international galleries, for the past 10 years with the Mostini gallery in Paris and currently at the Ici et la gallery. He has had exhibitions in Germany, France, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Romania, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. He has public artworks in different cities: Barcelona, Amman, Riyadh, Andorra, Santiago de Chile, Sao Paulo, Mexico City. He has works in several museums and private collections, and has received awards and distinctions from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Government of Spain. Cerda has made stage designs for theater, and designed sculptural furniture furniture (Art To Use) that has been exhibited for seven consecutive years at the Paris Fair and currently at the Petershan Gallery in London’s Cover Garden. Currently, Josep Cerdà works in sound sculpture and soundscape. He has studied the soundscapes of the Azores Islands, Bahia, Sao Paulo and Brasilia in Brazil, Chile, Mexico City, Bolivia, Colombia, Jordan, Romania, and China. In 2010 he made the recording Soundscape of the Mediterranean, commissioned by the European Institute of the Mediterranean. In 2012 he was selected at the Sao Paulo Biennial to present his work on Sound Art Sound installation for six speakers [Pluienuit / Tuyau] on Radio Biennial. At Escultura Sonora, he specializes in percussion sound sculptures, of which he has made a sculpture project in Yi-Chang city, Hubei and exhibitions and concerts such as the one held in 798 in Beijing. In Shen Zhen he has performed two concerts: one jointly with the pianist Lang Lang and another organized by the environmental organization WWF. He has also made environmental sound sculptures to amplify and reverberate the sounds of the sea such as those made in Qingdao City and Weifang, China. He has made a sound art installation at the MAMT Museum of Modern Art in Tarragona, in art-Graulet, France and collaborated with the Master in Sound Art on the sound installation New spaces of transmission and resistance at the Sonar 2020 Festival.
