Socio-environmental analysis and intervention: Urban environments, community, and sustainability
Traditionally, social intervention and environmental intervention have been conceptualized as distinct and independent fields of action, sharing certain points of intersection but characterized by separate and unconnected methodologies and strategic approaches. However, the notion of sustainability definitively integrates both dimensions as manifestations of a single, overarching issue.
From this perspective, the foundational premise of this programme is that individuals, communities, and their environments constitute an inseparable and interdependent global unit, wherein the various components are inextricably linked and mutually constitutive, giving rise to an integrated structure. Consequently, any environmental intervention must necessarily account for psychological and social dimensions, insofar as individuals, groups, and communities are ultimately the subjects affected by—and the beneficiaries of—transformations in the physical environment.
Similarly, all social interventions must incorporate the environmental factors inherent in the context, given that such actions are never undertaken in isolation but rather within a defined socio-physical setting. Within this framework, environmental education and awareness-raising emerge as key mechanisms for reconciling the relationship between environmental transformation and human development—both personal and collective—culminating in what may be broadly termed sustainable psycho-socio-environmental development.
The objective of the programme is to provide specialised training for professionals from both the social sciences (such as psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists) and the fields of social welfare and community intervention (including social workers, social managers, and environmental and social educators), as well as for architects, urban planners, design and engineering professionals, senior public administrators, and, more broadly, all those engaged in environmental and social interventions who require a comprehensive, integrated, and multidisciplinary education within these contexts.
This training is tailored to the disciplinary background of each participant, fostering a shared foundation of knowledge, terminology, and practice that will support future applied work requiring interdisciplinary collaboration.
Building upon a set of cross-cutting concepts—such as the socio-physical environment, intervention, quality of life, and sustainability—the programme is designed to combine the presentation, critical reflection, and discussion of the core content of its various modules with the analysis of practical case studies. These may include real-world problems, applied research, professional experiences, field visits, and study trips, all aimed at facilitating the integration of theoretical knowledge into diverse areas of professional practice. Additionally, the programme introduces specific methodological and intervention tools geared towards both research and practical application.
The programme is structured into three modules.

Foundational Knowledge for Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Intervention
From the perspective of the city as a socio-environmental system, it presents some of the areas where current reflection on the relationship between the urban phenomenon and the behavior of individuals and groups is developed.
Urban Systems and Behaviours
Dimensions of the urban phenomenon. Territory, urban structure, and sustainable mobility. Design for All. Environmental design and the social use of space. People, environment, and safety. Conflict and coexistence. Environmental management of the city.
Participation and Sustainability
Environmental participation as a prerequisite for a more sustainable society: psychosocial dimensions. Political and methodological foundations. Urban social movements. Models and strategies for urban intervention. Techniques and case studies.
Environmental Marketing, Communication, and Education
Fundamental elements and principles of social communication. Nature-based versus urban environmental education. Concepts and techniques for the design and evaluation of environmental information, education, and promotion programmes. Textual and multimedia resources (institutions, groups, collectives, campaigns…).
It runs in parallel throughout the course, presenting specific methodological and intervention programs and tools aimed at research, planning, and socio-environmental intervention. It supports the completion of the postgraduate project.
Methodologies, Resources, and Tools for Analysis and Intervention
An introduction to psychosocial research: quantitative and qualitative information-gathering techniques. Interviews, questionnaires, rating scales, the Delphi method. Sampling strategies. Ethnographic and observational techniques. Needs assessment methods. Data analysis. IT and simulation tools.
This programme can be complemented by the postgraduate course “Environmental Management in Business and Public Administration: Resources, Communication, and Change” (30 ECTS credits).
Each of these programmes leads to a postgraduate qualification, and together they provide a comprehensive and complementary education towards the Master’s Degree in Environmental Intervention and Management.
