Local student or PDI
I'm a local student, lecturer or researcher and I want to contribute to language reception activities
Bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree, master’s degree, teaching, research
First of all: thank you! The Catalan language and cultural reception plan is an initiative of the Office of the Vice-Rector for Institutional Relations, Communication and Language Policy aimed mainly at exchange students and teaching and research staff completing mobility stays, but its benefits also extend to local students and staff.
The Language Services has been responsible for language and cultural reception for a number of years, but the new Plan is a step forward and our staff work hard to make it a success. However, this effort would serve little purpose without the implication of the rest of the UB community. If you want to lend a hand, we can give you some ideas.
How can you help us?
Help a student practise Catalan and practise a foreign language yourself.
The UB has a Language exchange service for local students who want to practise foreign languages and help international students learn more Catalan. Everyone wins! Catalan, Ukrainian, German, Italian, Korean, English, Japanese, Basque, Turkish, French… among others. And if you want to learn Catalan and get to know Spanish-speaking students (from Spain and Latin America) we organize Catalan conversation groups.
Want to lend a hand?
CATclub is a community of international students interested in finding out about Catalan language and culture during their time at the UB and local students who volunteer to support them.
We take care of everything: we organize meetings, excursions and visits to some of the most emblematic places in and around Barcelona and to others that perhaps you’ve never even heard of!
Science, culture, art, fun… in Catalan! An excellent way to share and get something back: friendship, language, knowledge…
Sign up using this form. And if you have an idea for a new activity, we’re all ears! sl.acollida@ub.edu.
Would you like to share your expertise with international students and help them to practise Catalan? Join us at CATclub!
Many of the activities we organize at the Language Services are contributed to by the University’s lecturers and researchers: city tours, talks about history, ecology, feminism, gastronomy, literature… We’re interested in any area of knowledge and there’s nothing like an activity led by an expert from the University itself; our students appreciate the difference. If you’d like to share your expertise with others, we’d love to hear from you. Write to us at sl.acollida@ub.edu.
This Plan wouldn’t be viable if local students didn’t stand up for their linguistic rights. The UB is committed to the principle of language transparency, which entails publicly announcing the language of instruction for each subject before the start of enrolment. Once announced, the language cannot be changed and must be maintained for the duration of the academic year. Students can check on the University of Barcelona website to see what language will be used in the different class groups for the bachelor’s degree or university master’s degree they want to enrol in. If you have any comments or suggestions, you can contact us via the Enquiries about language use mailbox.
The main objective of the Plan is to make it easier to comply with the principle of language transparency. If you still feel that your rights have not been given due consideration, you can lodge an anonymous complaint using the Complaints about language rights mailbox; we’re here to support you and find a satisfactory solution.
Each UB faculty has a Language Promotion Committee (CDL) responsible for Catalan language activities and multilingualism, which works with the other faculty committees to form a UB-wide network. Find out how to get involved and consult the range of activities on offer (competitions, awards, talks, etc.) on the Enxarxats blog.
