The aim of this session is to explore the traditions and forms of social protest that have endured despite the changes brought about by far-reaching social and political changes. Some forms of protest that were considered archaic endured in industrial societies, and some of the most common forms of mobilisation in the industrial world continue today in our post-industrial societies. We also wish to consider how changes in the law and institutions aimed at modifying the everyday life of the population may encounter diffi culties that arise from social resilience, the inherited weight of customs and tradition, or the continued existence of certain power relations. Th e aim of this panel is to demonstrate the existence of ongoing forms of protest and resistance to change in the world of work. Papers on social protests led by women are particularly welcome. We invite papers that seek to understand the place of these long-term phenomena in the social history of labor.
