Description:
Orrit Castle, well documented since the beginning of the 9th century, is one of the main fortifications of the county of Ribagorça during the Carolingian period. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that it could date from an earlier period or, at least, have replaced an older nearby center of power, since, in addition to appearing in the sources a few years after the Frankish conquest, in recent times have begun to emerge evidence of an ancient settlement in the area. Proof of this is the epigraphic stele from the classical period that was found in the nearby church of Sant Pere d’Orrit during its restoration and, above all, the surprising mention of the territorium Orritense that has been found in an exceptional document from 522 belonging to the Saint Victorian of Asan collection.
