The League of European Research Universities (LERU), to which the University of Barcelona belongs, is organising this online seminar on 28 April between 9:30 and 12:15.
The seminar emerges from LERU’s concern about the dependence of higher education institutions on certain business sectors, as well as from the European digital legislation in the pipeline since 2021 that seems not to take into account the specific nature of higher education, research and innovation. This legislation is mainly designed for sectors such as big tech, which leads to the question “what is the scope of application of the new legal frameworks vis-à-vis public universities?” LERU is proposing specific amendments to the European Commission and the European Parliament and asks its members to convey LERU’s concerns and suggestions to their governments.
The seminar aims to share how EU data-related legislation is affecting universities and invites experts to shed light on the situation, potential impact, and related concerns.
The seminar will be presented by Thomas Margoni, Research Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the Faculty of Law and Criminology of the University of KU Leuven, and Alea López de San Román, Policy Officer at the European Commission’s Directorate for Research and Innovation, Open Science Unit. The presentation will be followed by a plenary Q&A session.
