Within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation (2017-2020), the State Research Agency has opened the 2019 call for the granting of Accreditations and public aid for “Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence” and “María de Maeztu Units of Excellence”.
The aim of this call is to promote the quality of Spanish scientific research by recognising the best centres and units that stand out for the relevance and international impact of scientific results. In addition to this recognition, the call finances the strategic plans and strategic research programmes proposed, respectively, by the centres or units, aimed at consolidating their scientific capacities, contributing to the leadership of Spanish research and acting as a pole of attraction for international talent.
The maximum budget for the call is 52 million euros. The funding for the “Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence” is 4 million euros over 4 years, while for the “María de Maeztu Units of Excellence”, the funding is 2 million euros over the same period. The distinction between the two types of action is established according to legal personality, the degree of autonomy in administrative and economic management and, finally, the number of researchers. Accreditation and aid are obtained through an evaluation and selection process based on scientific criteria and in accordance with demanding international standards.
Applications must be submitted through Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities electronic site. The deadline for submitting applications is 18 December 2019.
