A pathway towards multidimensional academic careers – A LERU framework for the evaluation of researchers

The League of European Research Universities (LERU), made up of the 23 most research-intensive universities, of which the University of Barcelona is a member, has presented the publication A pathway towards multidimensional careers. A LERU framework for the assessment of researchers, led by Professor Bert Overlaet of the Catholic University of Leuven, that addresses what should be the optimal model for the assessment of teaching and research staff at universities.

The document is based on the exchange of practices that are being carried out in the framework of the member universities regarding the evaluation of research staff in the contexts of recruitment, promotion and evaluation, developing a common framework that can be inspirational and supportive. The aim is to reward and recognise the diversity of profiles and contributions, taking into account the multidimensional nature of academic careers. The document is illustrated with examples from LERU universities, where new ways of doing research staff assessment are already being developed.

In addition, the European Commission calls for the establishment of a coalition of institutions committed to changing the current model of scientific research assessment, which the University of Barcelona has joined. The University of Barcelona is currently studying how to introduce some of these changes in the Academic Dedication Plan as well as in the competitions for the provision of teaching posts.
