CONFERENCE: RELOADING HYSTERIA: IMAGES OF HYSTERIA BETWEEN (MEDICAL) SCIENCE, ART HISTORY AND CONTEMPORARY ART

Hanne Loreck (Gender Studies)
Professor at the Hochschule Fürbildende Kunste Hamburg University.

According to Sigmund Freud, the symptoms of hysteria fulfill two conditions: the past and the actual moment: "everything goes back to remembering," Freud once stated. Known as a (female) disease for ages, hysteria became a subject of medical and neurological research in the second half of the 19th century. Modeled by representations of the obsessed in art and supported by large quantities of so-called scientific or clinical photographs, the theatrical and aesthetic phenomenon immediately attracted the attention of scientists and artists alike: the examination and representation of hysteria they had become two sides of the same coin. From there, what the French art historian Georges Didi-Huberman called the invention of hysteria in the late 19th century, the lecture will criticize any ontology of being hysterical, especially when attributed to women. Instead, he looks at hysteria as a (creative) method in which research, media material and the imaginary are intertwined. It proposes its contemporary revision as a set of means and methods to subvert and disarm institutions of all kinds: subjectivity, arts and socio-politics.

12.00 - 13.00

CONFERENCE: BIOPOLITICS AND NECROPOLITICS IN RELATION TO THE LACANIAN FOUR DISCOURSES

Marina Grzinic, philosopher, artist and theorist
Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. University of Vienna
http://m1.antville.org/, http://www.grzinic-smid.si/

The question today that remains for art and theory, the social and political is the question of the social bond and our inner place. Are we able to act, to analyze critically, to resist, or better said, to insurgency? If so, how? What is the social bond that structures neoliberal global capitalism? How to talk about ideology, subjectivity, power and life, if it is said that we live today in the world of post-ideology, post-politics conditions. The conference will try to rethink these questions and, at the same time, confront two conceptualizations of the way of life, on the one hand, biopolitics and necropolitics and, on the other, the four Lacanian discourses, to answer the main question of our ability to react and, moreover, change these current conditions of overexploitation and dispossession of capital.
