The Spanish Civil War gave rise to a vast quantity of military cartography. The cartographic services of the Franquist army printed about two million maps. The exact number of maps printed by the Republican map services is unknown, but the documentation consulted indicates it was similar to, or higher than that of the Franquist army. Production of this cartography was carried out, on both sides alike, by different cartographical institutions. This fact, plus the evolution of the war itself, led to most of this documentation being scattered in a multitude of archives and map libraries.

Aims

1 – To catalogue the little-known, special war editions.

2 – To catalogue the cartographical documentation preserved in archives and map libraries which have not been the target of systematic consultation.

3 – To document the accounts of surviving cartographers involved in compiling the material.
