The History of Cartography Study Group (Grup d’Estudis d’Història de la Cartografia –GEHC-) collaborates in this exhibition on the life and work of the topographer Dionisio Casañal y Zapatero. The exhibition has been organized for the Zaragoza City Council and the Department of Geography and Regional Planning of the University of Zaragoza.

Dionisio Casañal y Zapatero could be considered the most prominent and prolific Aragonese topographer of all the times. His best known works are town plans of five provincial capitals (Zaragoza, Pamplona, Córdoba, Vitoria and Huesca), but his long professional career included many more activities; including numerous lot plans of municipalities in Ebro valley.

The exhibition brings together a selected sample of these documents and other cartographic works on Casañal, informative panels, author’s personal items (medals, diplomas, etc.) and various topographic equipment of the period given by the l’Instituto Geográfico Nacional.

During the opening day, a series of conferences were developed with the participation of two members of GEHC. José Luis Villanova, which is also one of the curators of the exhibition, gave the inaugural conference on the life and work of Dionisio Casañal and Francesc Nadal spoke about urban cartography in Spain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries [Dossier in PDF].
