From September 13 to 15 of 2018 it will take place in the Weston Library of Oxford, the international simposiumMapping Empires – Colonial Cartographies of Land and Sea organized by the Comissió sobre Història de la Cartografia of International Cartographic Association (ICA), the Comissió sobre Cartografia Topogràfica, of the ICA too, and the Bodleian Libraries of Oxford University.
Now it is opened the deadline to present contributions (papers and posters) focus on the research about cartografía de África, Asia, Oceanía and America cartography, link to exploration and imperialist activity during, but not only, the 19th century (it is means from middle 18th to middle 20th). The ascend of european hegemony was developed at the same time of scientific progress that made possible the evolution of topographic maps, hydrographic charts and thematic maps. These colonial cartographies generated a rich heritage of maps that continue influencing in the style and ways of creating current maps.
