Franco in the spanish cinema

Author: LUCAS CLOTET, Judit

Barcelona University, 2004-2005

Judit Lucas Clotet presents in this investigation an approach to the treatment of the figure of Francisco Franco through the spanish cinema. In this sense she treis to see how different films of different stages of the history of Spain have approached the figure of Franco in a very different ways.

Before choosing the specific subject of the DEA, I was very clear that it would be something related to the world of cinema. After speaking with Professor Josep Maria Caparrós, I chose to deal with the figure of Francisco Franco from the vision offered by the various films that have inspired Francisco Franco, starting with Raza (1941), by José Luis Sáenz de Heredia and ending with the film ¡Buen viaje, Excelencia! (2003) by Albert Boadella.

I choosed this topic because I think it has not been studied too much and it would be interesting to see how the filmmakers have approached the figure of Francisco Franco, investigate how many similar productions there are, in which period of time they were made or wich film genres are used to portray the subject.

As for the films, we decided to carefully analyze three that belong to different historical moments: Caudillo (1975-77), by Basilio Martín Patino filmed in hiding at the end of Franco’s Dictatorship, Dragon Rapide (1986), by Jaime Camino in the socialist era and ¡Buen viaje, Excelencia! (2003), with the PP on the governement.

The rest of the films would be analyzed later in future doctoral work. Therefore I have chosen to deal only with specific aspects: the technical sheet, the biography of the director, the synopsis and the press comments. Anyway, I have attached the bibliographical references of some works, which would be of capital importance when I undertook the analysis of the rest of filmography.
