This research is focused on the evolution of Basque nationalism in exile during the period 1956-1977. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent establishment of the Franco dictatorship, forced the Basque Government and the Basque nationalists to flee into exile, which will become a refuge as well as a framework for the conservation and development of Basque nationalism. The influence of exile will condition international relations, the homologation of the Basque cause and ideological references. Through the figure of Manuel Irujo, member of the Basque Nationalist Party and the main ideologist of nationalism in exile during the studied stage, we will verify how exile transforms, conditions and protects the construction of the imagined political nation.
