In 1983, following the model of other similar foreign entities — the International Association for Media and History (IAMHIST, Oxford) and the Jean Vigo Institute (Perpignan) —a group of seventh art professionals considered it appropriate to create a similar body. Spanish.
Thus was born the “FILM-HISTORY” Research Center, based in Barcelona, in order to fill an existing gap in our country. The objectives of the new center – initially registered as an Association – were specified by bringing together various experts and professionals from the different branches of cinema, both theoretical and technical, along with good fans and interested in the film phenomenon, in order to promote cultural activities around the dissemination and better knowledge of the seventh art.
In 2001 the group was renamed the Film-History Research Center and was recognized as a Research Group and Laboratory of Contemporary History and Cinema of the University of Barcelona, integrating into the Barcelona Science Park as associated entity. At the same time, the Group also depends on the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation of the University of Barcelona, and has its headquarters in the Faculty of Geography and History of the same University.
