The international seminar “From one extension to another… European integration and Southern Europe, 1974-1995” will take place on 29 and 30 September, at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, with the participation of Professor Víctor Gavín, member of our Section.

The seminar – with an organizing committee made up of professors Antonio Moreno Juste (UCM), Misael Arturo López Zapico (UAM) and Carlos Sanz Díaz (UCM) – will gather the contributions of a very long list of researchers, around three thematic workshops : “Sources for the study of the second enlargement”; “European Communities and Iberian Enlargement: Comparative Perspectives” and “Iberian Enlargement from a Western Perspective: The Mediterranean and the Cold War”. A round table on “Protagonists of the negotiating processes in Spain and Portugal” is also planned. Professor Víctor Gavín will present a paper entitled “Stability for the sake of democracy versus stability first and foremost: the EEC and the USA in the face of Spain’s political transition following the death of General Franco”.

The seminar is also the closing of the research project “Spain and Portugal before the second enlargement of the European Communities. A comparative study, 1974 – 1986 ”and the launch of the new“ European construction from the south, from Mediterranean enlargement to northern enlargement (1986 – 1995). The contours of Europeanization in a comparative perspective ”, of which Professor Víctor Gavín is a researcher.
