XV Spanish Congress of Sociology: Sociology for the Digital Society

From June 26 to 29, 2024 the XV Spanish Congress of Sociology took place in Seville under the slogan: #SociologíaParaLaSociedadDigital (#SociologyForTheDigitalSociety).

The XV Spanish Congress of Sociology has reached the attendance figure of almost 1,600 people analyzing the necessary tools so that the digital society is not thrown into a world that is not real. As ISA President Geoffrey Pleyers said: “Democracy is not just the right to vote, although it is indispensable. It requires an informed citizenry that understands how society works and is not swayed by false information. In social networks public opinion can be confused and sociology is fundamental to analyze what is really happening.”

During the congress, up to 60 working group sessions of the different disciplines have been organized at the same time and, in total, more than 300 sessions during the entire congress, in addition to 30 activities including symposia, workshops and round tables.

All the events, except the opening ceremony, have been held at the facilities of the University Pablo de Olavide, which has turned to this meeting breaking historical records of participation.

The president of the FES, Màrius Domínguez said: “The sociology congress responds to the challenges of the digital society from our perspective, our questions, our methods, with a transformative vocation and social impact to address the new social inequalities.

During the congress, Mercedes Camarero, President of the Local Organizing Committee of the XV Spanish Congress of Sociology commented: “The sociological community has responded very well. We have had a great success, as we broke the record for the number of papers presented. Sociologists came from all over the world, from Europe, Latin America and even Asia.” On the changes taking place in the digital society, Mercedes Camarero commented “The digital society is undergoing a series of transformations that are revolutionary in nature. This is not progress, it is not modernization, but a society of a different nature.”

For her part, Costanza Tobío mentioned, “Sociology creates mirrors so that society can look at itself, evaluate itself and decide whether it likes what it sees, identify in what aspects it feels satisfied or what it needs to change and where it should go. Today, those mirrors that sociology builds are digital mirrors.”
