On May 2023 the photographic exhibition “Guerreras”, by visual artist Eleonora Ghioldi, curated by Andrea Beltramo, has been presented at the UIB campus as part of the projects of the Office of Cooperation, Development and Solidarity of the UIB, “XIX Call for grants for actions of education for social transformation – 2023 “.
This exhibition is conceived as an intervention in the public space, as part of a broad project of creation and research, which investigates from the documentary portrait and the witness, on issues such as sexual violence, femicide, transvesticide and state terrorism.
This is how the author, Eleonora Ghioldi, explains the project:
“Guerreras” was born in 2011, during my residence in the USA, a country where I lived for twenty-five years, when three friends confided in me their personal experiences of sexual violence. These stories were joined by others where the project began to grow, from word of mouth, with the goal of covering as many voices and perspectives as possible. They allowed me to photograph them in their homes, which generated intimate environmental portraits that capture their individuality, vulnerability, dignity and strength”.
“Part of this research was developed in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and had its continuity in Argentina, since I returned in 2018, and where I currently live. Throughout my work, it has become clear to me that, although this violence persists in different societies, the problem eludes generalizations due to the nuances of each situation. People experience gender-based violence on many different levels, from street harassment to the most extreme violence, femicide, to all possible ranges of experiences and relationships, including forced sterilization and state terrorism. Thus, I approached this project as an observer who engages her sensitivity and subjectivity towards this issue”.
The images that are presented on the campus of the UIB and currently will be visible until July 28 in the building M. Jovellanos are accompanied by a QR through which you can access the interview to the people portrayed. The proposal was complemented by the seminar-workshop “Guerreras, tramas visibles de la denuncia. A cross-border approach”, which took place from May 8-12.
