About Us

Welcome to the Collective Emergent Phenomena in Physical Systems (CEPS) group. Our research focuses on the study of emergent phenomena in complex systems, with applications ranging from physical systems to biological and social networks. We are part of the Universitat de Barcelona Institute of Complex Systems (UBICS), where we aim to advance understanding of collective behaviors in a variety of systems.

Research Areas

Physics of Socioeconomic Systems

We explore the application of physical principles to understand complex socioeconomic systems, including the dynamics of financial markets, social behavior, and large-scale human interactions.

Dynamics on Networks

Our research focuses on understanding how dynamic processes evolve on complex networks. We study diffusion, spreading processes, and synchronization phenomena across various networked systems.

Structural Properties of Complex Networks

We investigate the topological and structural features of complex networks, including small-world properties, scale-free distributions, and modularity, to understand how structure influences function.

Data-driven Problems

We tackle problems where data-driven approaches are essential, using machine learning and statistical techniques to model and analyze complex systems based on real-world data.

Neuroscience

We study how complex, collective behaviour emerges in discrete dynamical networks driven by simple local rules and weak noise. By focusing on attractors and their transitions, instead of the full state space, we develop scalable ways to characterise activity patterns, correlations, and functional complexity. This helps us identify network regimes that are especially suitable for computation and information processing near the edge of criticality.
