THE RADIO TRACKING OF SOME PAIRS OF BONELLI’S EAGLE OF BARCELONA PROVINCE IS GOING ON

The Equip de Biologia de la Conservació – Ŕliga Perdiguera is going on with the studies to know the use of the territory by the eagles. Between 2002 and 2004 is done the radio tracking of 11 adult eagles that belong to 6 territories, 3 of them located in the prelitoral area of the province of Barcelona and another 3 situated at the massif of Garraf and l’Ordal. After 2 years much information is obtained about the size of the eagles territories and about the areas and habitat types selected by them. Nowadays data are worked in detail to obtain information that can be useful for the conservation of the species. This study is included in the project SITXELL of the Diputació de Barcelona, where the Bonelli’s eagle is used as a biological indicator to determine the areas of the province that have a greater interest for the conservation of its natural values or to set natural connections between protected areas.

The radio tracking of the two eagles of the most recently occuped territory of the Parc Natural del Garraf has begun this February. With this couple will be obtained the information of all the territories of this core. This is an area with a high density of Bonelli’s eagle pairs that is surrounded with heavily populated areas, so we hope to get very useful information about intra-specific competition and the interaction with the human uses. The Equip wishes to sinceraly thank the support oferred by the Parc Natural del Garraf to ease the realitzation of this study.
