Two electrical pylons are corrected thanks to the pioneering work by students of the Secondary School Cor de Maria (Valls, Tarragona)

The Secondary School Cor de Maria (Valls, Tarragona) started a pioneering work in order to reduce bird electrocution in power lines. In this work, students of 4th of ESO have begun a long-term monitoring of all electrical pylons in distribution power lines within the ‘Alt Camp’ area, with help of the ‘Agents Rurals’, and writing down all impacts observed on the fauna.

This work carried out by the students allowed to identify pylons where corrective measures should be implemented urgently and pylons where corrective measures had been already implemented but there were some technical problems to be solved in order to avoid bird electrocution effectively. With this information, the Conservation Biology Group of the University of Barcelona could contact with the electrical company Endesa, which has already implemented the correction measures in two pylons during March 2012.

We congratulate the students, the Secondary School Cor de Maria and its teachers for this pioneering work, as well as Endesa. This is a good example of positive synergies between the different parts involved: teachers, students, ‘Agents Rurals’, researchers and electrical companies!
