Laura Herrero, lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UB, is one of the five Spanish women scientists awarded with a fellowship of the 8th LʼOréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Programme, created in 2000. The Programme is supported by the State Secretary for Research, Development and Innovation of the Spanish Ministry for Economics and Competitiveness. Its main objective is to support and promote the research developed by Spanish young women scientists.

Laura Herrero, lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UB, is one of the five Spanish women scientists awarded with a fellowship of the 8th LʼOréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Programme, created in 2000. The Programme is supported by the State Secretary for Research, Development and Innovation of the Spanish Ministry for Economics and Competitiveness. Its main objective is to support and promote the research developed by Spanish young women scientists.

More than 300 women scientists participated in the latest edition. Laura Herrero will receive support to carry out her research in the field of lipid metabolism and the design of new therapies against obesity and diabetes. Herrero researches at the Regulation of Lipid Metabolism Group, is member of the Institute of Biomedicine of the UB (IBUB), affiliated centre with the campus of international excellence BKC, and the Biomedical Research Networking Centres on Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn). In 2012, she was the only Spanish researcher honoured with the Rising Star Award, conferred by the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) and the pharmaceutical company Janssen, the most prestigious one given to European Young researchers in the field of diabetes research.

LʼOréal-UNESCO award ceremony took place on Thursday 14 November, at the Real Casa de Correos in Madrid. The personalities who participated in the event were: Carmen Vela, Spanish state secretary for Research, Development and Innovation; María Blasco, director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO); María Vallet Regí, professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Complutense University of Madrid; Capitolina Díaz, president of the Spanish Association for Women in Science and Technology (AMIT), and Ignacio González, president of the Autonomous Community of Madrid. Margarita Salas, ad honorem researcher at the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Centre (CSIC-UAM), chaired the jury. This year, the Programme also awarded the scientific projects developed by researchers Marta Alonso, from the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA); Begoña Soto, from IMDEA Nanoscience; María Ángeles Tormo, from the Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research (IVIA-CITA), and Reyes Benlloch, from the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG).
