Objectives and competences
Objectives
- A solid foundation in the science of engineering and a series of technical skills, and knowledge of the structures, properties, development and application of a variety of materials; the skills required to design and use such materials for different professional ends.
- The ability to adapt R&D expertise to a variety of professional contexts.

General competences
- Commitment to ethical practice (critical and self-critical capabilities/capacity to demonstrate attitudes consistent with accepted notions of ethical practice).
- Capacity for learning and responsibility (capacity for analysis and synthesis, to adopt global perspectives and to apply the knowledge acquired/capacity to take decisions and adapt to new situations). This includes the general ability for critical reasoning, foreseeing problems and finding solutions.
- Ability to work in a team (capacity to collaborate with others and contribute to a common project/and capacity to work in cross-disciplinary and multicultural teams). The ability to work in a team implies in many of the branches of materials engineering to participate in cross-disciplinary teams. This competence encompasses other aspects, such as leadership, decision-making and even managerial skills.
- Creative and entrepreneurial skills (capacity to conceive, design and manage projects/capacity to research and integrate new knowledge and approaches). Creative and entrepreneurial skills, as well as the capacity and initiative to adapt to new situations, are highly valued skills in career opportunities for materials engineers.
- Concern for sustainability (capacity to assess the social and environmental impact of actions taken in a particular setting/capacity to adopt integrated and systemic approaches).
- Communication skills (capacity to understand and produce spoken and written Catalan, Spanish and a third language, including the comprehension and use of specialized terminology/capacity to research and integrate information in these languages).

- Capacity to plan how to solve problems related to the selection, manufacture, processing, use and recycling of all kinds of materials according to the available tools and the time and resource limitations.
- Capacity to transmit knowledge and communicate procedures, results and techniques related to the behaviour and use of all kinds of materials.
- Capacity to learn and acquire new knowledge and techniques.
- Fundamentals aspects of science. Capacity to understand relevant concepts of the basic sciences (mathematics, chemistry and physics) to understand, describe and solve problems and challenges of science and materials engineering.
- Ability to carry out and interpret measurements, calculations, assessments, studies, reports, plans and other tasks in the field of materials engineering.
- Ability to identify the structures of different types of materials and to know materials characterization and analysis techniques.
- Knowledge of how to model the mechanical, electronic, chemical or biological behaviour of materials and their incorporation into components and devices.
- Capacity to design, evaluate, select and manufacture materials according to their applications.
- Capacity to design, develop and control processes to produce and transform materials.
- Capacity to design and manage the use and durability of materials components and devices, with special attention to the impairment of materials and the respect for the environment.
- Capacity to design, implement and control the processes of reuse and/or storage of materials, with a particular focus on caring for the environment.
- Ability to assess the safety, durability and structural integrity of materials and the components that are made with them.
- Knowledge of the organizational and economic principles of company management and how to apply these principles to the management of industries related to the previous points.
- Knowledge of basic economics and statistics that facilitate the understanding, description and solution of problems and challenges in materials science and engineering.
- Ability to learn to use appropriate software in any activity and field of materials engineering.

Recommended applicant profile
- Interest in the operation and structure of technology and technical equipment of different kinds.
- Reasoning skills.
- Initiative in developing original ideas.
- Upper secondary school studies in mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer studies and, preferably, in biology, industrial technology, electrical engineering and technical drawing.

Previous years
Placements
Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment.They are therefore included in the academic record. There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
