The Enteric Virus Laboratory of the University of Barcelona is devoted to the study of human enteric viral agents as norovirus, sapovirus, astrovirus, rotavirus and hepatitis A and E viruses. Studies on these agents cover molecular and clinical aspects of these viruses, as well as their role as food and environmental contaminants. The laboratory has facilities in two campus of the University of Barcelona: Diagonal Sud and Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus.
The Enteric Virus Laboratory was the first university laboratory in Spain to receive the certification of Good Laboratory Practices for validation studies of viral safety and antiviral activity. The group has been recognized as a Consolidated Research Group by the Generalitat de Catalunya (2021SGR01089)It is also member of the Research Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety of the University of Barcelona (INSA-UB), awarded as a research unit of excellence María de Maeztu 2023-2026 (CEX2021-001234-M).
Since 2019, the Enteric Virus Laboratory has launched the SAVCA Laboratory (Services for the Analysis of Viruses in the Food Chain and Water Cycle) at the Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus, to offer specialized services related to the virological safety of food.
