This volume (ed. Antoni Conejo and Pol Bridgewater) aims to explore the physical dimension of hospitals, both as tangible brick-and-mortar buildings and as symbolic vehicles, as well as their impact on urban and rural landscapes. It also serves as a testament to the current vigour of hospital studies in the Iberian Peninsula and specifically in the territories once part of the Crown of Aragon, although it is not exclusively limited to these regions. Contributions on Northern and Central Italy and the Iberian Muslim world are also included, not only to enrich the discourse of the book but also to showcase the collaborative scholarly connections forged over the past decades.
The book is divided into four sections: an introduction to key themes, a collection of articles on hospital heritage and urban landscapes, an exploration of the relationship between hospitals and their surroundings, and a final section on medicine and epidemics.
This volume encompasses the work of both established and emerging scholars, and also serves as a written testament to the professional and personal bonds fostered among researchers from different universities and centres.
