The first protocol to stop ghost fishing’s environmental impact in Catalonia is presented

Fighting ghost fishing, reducing the impact from fishing gears that are lost in seabeds and raising awareness among the sectors that are involved in marine ecosystems in Catalonia: these are the main guidelines in Protocol per a l’extracció d’arts de pesca perduts a la costa catalana, a report that has been published during the session “Preservation of corals, a shared objective”, on Monday, March 26, in the head office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food (DARP).

This new protocol –the first one developed in Catalonia to stop the effects of ghost fishing- is led by Bernat Hereu, lecturer at the Faculty of Biology and member of the Biodiversity Research Institute of the University of Barcelona (IRBio), and coordinated by Joan Ylla, head of the Secció de Protecció del Litoral i Medi Marí (Section of Protection of Coasts and Marine Environment) of the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Generalitat de Catalunya.
