Scientists from all over the world alert Humankind. Second Warning
15,364 scientists from 184 different countries (among them some members of IRBio) sign the Manifesto "Scientists' Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice" published in BioScience on December 1, 2017 (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/bix125). In 1992, the Union of Concerned Scientists and more than 1,700 independent scientists wrote "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity". These scientists were worried about the state of planet Earth and called on humanity to reduce environmental destruction warning that a great change in our management of the Earth and its life is required, if we want to avoid human misery.
In their manifesto, they showed that humans are in collision with the natural world. They expressed concern about the current, imminent or potential damage on planet Earth that implies: ozone depletion, freshwater availability, depletion of marine life, dead areas at the ocean, forest loss, destruction of biodiversity, climate change and the continued growth of the human population. And it was announced that fundamental changes were urgently needed to avoid the consequences that our current trajectory may entail in the future.
After these twenty-five years of the first Manifest, the state of the planet is reviewed and evaluated, it is concluded that: humanity has not made sufficient progress to solve the expected environmental challenges and, alarmingly, they are getting worse. This second Manifesto advises humanity that we need to change our ways of doing to help the planet, if not we will reach the collapse.
Please distribute the published scientists’ warning article to others using social media such as Twitter with this link to the article at the BioScience website: https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/bix125
For example, you could simply write:
I signed the #ScientistsWarningtoHumanity and now everyone can help by sharing the following link: https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/bix125
Also, please provide the scientists’ warning article to the leaders of your organization, state, province, or country and any others that you think should know about this second warning to humanity.
Any scientist that did not sign the article before the BioScience publication deadline, is invited to endorse it now after publication by visiting (scientists.forestry.oregonstate.edu). Therefore, feel free to invite any of your scientist contacts to join in now by signing the article.
The voice of world scientists is essential in driving forward progress on dealing with climate change and other critical environmental trends. Working together, we can make great progress in preserving the biosphere for the sake of humanity.
