Tolerance and the Epistemology of Disagreement

27 April 2022  |  15:00  |  Hybrid Zoom / Seminari de Filosofia (UB, Barcelona)

Abstract

We should be tolerant. What does that mean? It certainly does not mean that we should, in general, allow people to behave in ways that we regard as morally wrong.  On the other hand, allowing people to behave in ways that we regard as appropriate does not involve any exercise of tolerance.  In this talk I will try to clarify some aspects of the structure of tolerance by exploring some connections between, on the one hand, the disposition to let one’s beliefs to be affected by the beliefs of others and, on the other, the appropriateness of allowing, on a given occasion, certain action that one regards as wrong.
