Naturalizing Intentionality: A Solution to the Indeterminacy Problem

02 March 2016  |  15:00  |  Seminari de Filosofia UB

Abstract

Naturalistic theories of content seek to specify the conditions that must be met for an entity to represent another entity. One of the most important objections against these theories is the so called 'Indeterminacy Problem'. In this paper, I first distinguish different ways of developing this objection, and argue that current accounts are unable to solve it. Then, I put foward an original version of teleosemantics, which I call 'Explanation-based Teleosemantics'. and argue that it can satisfactorily address this problem within the framework of a powerful naturalistic theory of content.
