The Semantics and Pragmatics reading group will meet every other week, throughout both semesters of the academic year 2024-25, starting in the week of October 14th.
As in previous years, we will read recent work on different topics in Semantics and Pragmatics (with some occasional older reading that might offer relevant background). Three of the topics that will be covered this year are the meaning of dogwhistles, the distinction between different aspects or kinds of meaning, and the distinction between lying and misleading. The reading list will be agreed upon and updated as we go along, depending on the interests of those attending. As in previous years, we will also devote some occasional session to discuss work by some of the members of the group.
The meetings will be either in hybrid format or on-line only. We will decide the specific format as well as the day and time to meet according to the preferences of those attending.
Two initial readings will be:
- Henderson, Robert and McCready, Elin, 2024, Signaling without Saying. The Semantics and Pragmatics of Dogwhistles. OUP.
- Geurts, Bart, 2024, “Common ground in pragmatics” (to appear in SEP)
