Conversational Dynamics and Centered Content
Convener: Max Kölbel
Period: second semester
We will investigate how information is exchanged through a conversation. One focus will be self-locating or centered content. What kinds of assertions (if any) involve centered content? What role do semantic and pragmatic features play in the exchange of centered content? But we will also be generally looking into accounts of how conversation proceeds, how the conversational score develops and how participants can gain information.
Last year, we looked at papers by, Buchanan, Egan, Elga, Lewis, Moss, Ninan, Pollock, Stalnaker, Stephenson, Torre, Weber, and others. This year, I propose to spend some time studying the basic literature on conversational models, but also to continue to read the latest contributions to recent debates.
Meetings will be Tuesdays 15-17h in room 412 of the UB philosophy faculty building, starting in 5th February 2013. Those interested in participating should ask Max (maxkolbel@yahoo.co.uk) to be put on the distribution list for this reading group, in order to receive information about what we are reading etc.
