Reasons, Reasoning, and Self-Awareness

We all engage in reasoning about what to think to how to act. This conference explores reasoning through its relation to self-awareness and self-knowledge. The approach is interdisciplinary, and hopes to span epistemology, the philosophy of mind, and cognitive science. Questions include:
    • Does reasoning and acting/believing for reasons require being aware of doing so?
    • Can reasoning, properly understood, be unconscious?
    • Does reasoning and deliberation give rise to a sense of agency?
    • Does our capacity to engage in reasoning play a role in how we come to know our beliefs and actions? Namely, does our capacity for critical reasoning ground self-knowledge?
    • Do our answers to the above questions differ in relation to the practical and epistemic domains?
