Evidentialism’s Bias Problem

Abstract

Evidentialism is the thesis that what it’s rational for you to believe it determined by your evidence. Many epistemologists think this is so obviously true as to scarcely need defence. In this paper, I will explain why I think that Evidentialism is false. In short, the problem is that Evidentialism cannot account for the fact that beliefs that are the product of unconscious biases are irrational. I’ll argue that explaining the irrationality of bias-infected beliefs requires rejecting Evidentialism and instead thinking about rationality in an entirely different way.
