In the philosophy of conspiracy theories particularists argue that “conspiracy theory” should be understood in a broad sense that also covers many widely accepted explanations of historical events. Hence, believing conspiracy theories is not per se irrational. Many particularists take that to imply that conspiracy theories deserve to be investigated more thoroughly. In this talk I will discuss one motivation for a particularist understanding of “conspiracy theory”. However, I will show that this motivation is compatible with a very critical attitude towards conspiracy theories in general.
