Project Description: Our research targets four Southern European countries (Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal) in order to produce an in-depth, historically and regionally nuanced understanding of ordinary people’s economic practices and their interaction with general economic processes. Delimitation of the area of study has both conceptual and substantive justification. Conceptually these countries have been aggregated following semi-periphery perspectives or uneven development definitions and as adhering to a family welfare model. Substantively they share their present predicament of deficit and debt crisis imposing harsh structural adjustment measures.
