BIrational Geometry, Group Actions, and Moduli spacES (BIGGAMES)

The research areas of the members of the BIrational Geometry, Group Actions, and Moduli spacES (BIGGAMES) group include:

The aim of this project is the study of problems in Mathematics dealing mainly with geometric, algebraic and arithmetic aspects of varieties equipped the action of a group. This includes birational properties and the moduli spaces classifying them. We will treat their theoretical aspects, but also their computational features and applications. To be more precise, we will focus on varieties with group actions, moduli spaces and several positivity conditions in birational geometry.

This project is funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, grant PID2023-147642NB-I00, and it is a natural continuation of the previous grants GALATEA and VALLDARAM.

PhD Scholarship Call - deadline: September 27th 2024, 14:00 CEST

Our grant includes a 4 year PhD scholarship to be supervised by one of the senior members of the project. The information on the scolarship and how to apply can be found at: You can found also these pdf files in the website: https://www.ub.edu/beques/3rcicle/FPI/convocatoria.html.
The application needs to be submitted using the UB-GAIA application that you will find in this webpage, starting on September 9. The direct link to the application website is here. These two pages are in Catalan, but inside the application you can “a priori” change to Spanish/English. Let us know if you have any difficulty with the language.

It is advisable to contact your prospective advisor and/or one of the PIs of this project if you are thinking in applying for this grant.
Please beware that the deadline for submitting your application is September 27th 2024, 14:00 CEST.

In the application:
  • In the selection grant, you choose the grant: “Geometría biracional, acciones de grupo y espacios de moduli”
  • .
Candidate requirements:
  • They must be able to be accepted into the doctoral program for the academic year 2024-2025 by the time the contract is formalized.
  • They must not already hold a doctoral degree.
  • They must not have defended their doctoral thesis.
  • They must have a thesis supervisor who is part of the research team of the funded project to which they will be attached by the time the contract is formalized.
  • In the case non-EU nationals and candidates not covered by international treaties signed by the European Union and ratified by Spain: To hold the necessary work and residence permits before the predoctoral contract is signed and ensure that they remain valid for the duration of the contractual relationship.

The BIGGAMES group is mainly based at the University of Barcelona (UB), but with researchers at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU)

Activities

Seminar activities are numerous and include a wide range from informal learning groups to more formal seminars.

The Algebraic Geometry Seminar, together with the other groups in Barcelona, meets on Friday afternoons (Seminari de Geometria Algebraica de Barcelona).

The SMGA brings together once or twice a year algebraic geometers (and neighbours) from Marseille, Montpellier, Nice, Toulouse, Barcelona, Genova and beyond. In November 2023, SMGA took place in Barcelona for the first time.
