I am full professor at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences (Ecology Unit) of the Universtity of Barcelona since 1990.
From the beginning of my research career, I focused my work on the study of Mediterranean seagrass ecology, mainly Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa. Within the ecophysiology research line, I have studied primary production ecology and the effects of limiting factors such as light or nutrients. I have also worked on the use of carbon by plants in the marine environment and on the interactions between plants and sediment. My recent interests are the study of the importance of seascape patterns in the functioning of the coastal ecosystems and the role of biotic interactions in the resilience of the macrophyte dominated benthic communities. Currently, I am working in the response of seagrasses to warming as result of climate change and its potential synergies with others stressors like eutrophication.
Other important field of research in which I am working concerns the development of water quality indicators based on seagrass communities.
Part of my activity is devoted to the training of researchers through the supervision of Master and PhD theses. |
