Richard March Hoe nació en setiembre de 1812 en Nueva York y falleció en junio de 1886 en Florencia (Italia), a la edad de 74 años. Trabajó en una fábrica de prensas de impresión que había sido fundada por su padre en Nueva York. Hoe innovó las máquinas de impresión que tenían para mejorar así el negocio, el cual pasó él a llevar tras la muerte de su padre. Hizo continuas mejoras que revolucionaron el proceso de impresión y es reconocido por producir la primera prensa rotativa.
